Margaret (Peg) Jeanette Davis

Margaret (Peg) Jeanette Davis

February 19,1935 – May 18, 2025

A longtime time resident of Savannah. Peg was born in New York, and graduated from Savannah High in 1952, where she participated on the yearbook staff as one of her many interests and achievements. As a young woman she excelled in rifle and pistol marksmanship competitions, winning the National Small Bore Rifle Championship. She went to college at Oglethorpe University and later earned her Masters degree at Smith College. After graduation she taught Health and Physical Education in Springfield, Virginia.

She returned to Savannah after early retirement to care for her mother in the family home on Columbus Drive. During this phase of her life, she became interested in and qualified as a licensed ham radio operator, which required mastering Morse Code messaging. She also volunteered with Red Cross and part of an emergency response team. Another involvement was as a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary with duties on land and afloat. The highlight of her service was taking the control of a Coast Guard vessel to dock it.

Peg was a devoted animal lover, providing a safe and loving home for most abused dogs and cats. For many years she attended dog training classes with her beloved Chelsey and Puck, where they trained to work as therapy dogs at Hospice and other facilities. Peg lived quietly with her pets, even taking her cat, Parker, when she moved to assisting living. In her short time at Buckingham South, Peg developed a strong trust and affection for her caregivers, for which her family is deeply grateful.

Peg was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Noel Davis (Bertha), a brother Noel Davis. She is survived by a niece, Cary and a nephew, Robert.

Remembrances can be made in lieu of flowers to the Savannah Chapter of the Humane Society.
